The grade tells you the steel’s yield strength — how much stress it takes before it bends permanently.

Bars are sold by diameter. Shops use millimetres, inch sizes or the traditional sutar (one-eighth of an inch):

Metric bars — 10, 12, 16, 20 and 25 mm — are close to these sizes but not the same. A 12 mm bar weighs about 0.89 kg per metre, noticeably less than a ½-inch bar. Make sure your drawings, the quotation and the delivered bars all use the same size. The weights come from a standard formula — diameter in mm, squared, divided by 162 — so you can work out any size yourself.
Per ton, per kg and weight checks
Steel is usually priced per ton (1,000 kg) for bulk orders and per kg for small ones. Because you pay by weight, underweight or undersized bars quietly cost you. To check:
- Weigh a sample on the supplier’s scale, or insist on a weighbridge slip for truckloads.
- Measure the length — standard bars are usually around 40 feet, but confirm with your supplier.
- Compare with the standard weight for the size you ordered: about 0.99 kg per metre for a ½-inch bar, 0.89 kg for a 12 mm bar. Much lighter means a thinner bar.
Mill-made vs re-rolled
Pakistan’s market includes large mills with modern furnaces and smaller re-rolling mills that roll bars from scrap or billets. Some re-rolled steel is fine; some is not — inconsistent strength, poor ribs or undersized bars. To protect yourself:
- Buy known brands from authorised dealers, such as Amreli, Mughal, Agha, Ittefaq, AFCO, Fazal, Naveena or Model Steel.
- Look for the embossed brand and grade on the bar.
- Ask for the mill test certificate for large orders.
- Check the ribs — deformed bars should have clear, regular ribs for grip in concrete.
